SCRATCH – Programming for kids

February 23, 2009

“Scratch is a new programming language that makes it easy to create your own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art — and share your creations on the web.”

Scratch is often described as a tool to teach kids how to program, but if you try it you will be surprised. It’s kind of addictive, and the logic it uses is really intuitive. Last week the authors came to the university to present the project and they explained us the theory for a succesfull interactive platform like this:

– Low floor: accesible, intuitive, easy to learn…

– High celing: no limits for growing and becoming complex

– Wide walls: freedom, flexibility, cutomization, variabilities

Download the software and play a little with it. Then share the project and observe the amount of “freaky” kids around world learning about programming through this intuitive game. to be honest, I’m getting scared of the future. All the platform is open source and everybody registered is allowed to download all projects shared by the children. It seems there is a section for Top Remixes… imagine: 8 years old kids remixing programs from other kid’s and sharing them again while they participate in forums and comment shared projects. There will be nothing to teach to the next generation ^^
