GIGAPAN: new technology on mediaMay 5, 2009
Gigapan is a system developed by Carnegie Mellon University collaborating with NASA Ames Intelligent robotics Group. There are 3 main technological advances on this invention:
1- A robotic head that works as a camera and captures a high-res images mosaic.
2- A software that mixes more than 1.200 images (12 megapixels each) in order to produce one unic picture.
3- A Gigapan “browser” that allows the user to explore that “super-pictures”
This sytem was first used to obtain 2D and 3D images from the surface of Mars.
